Normal Mapping

There was only one place on my model that I wanted to have a normal map, and that was the treads for the tracks. I used Maya's transfer maps tool to create my normal map. I chose to have the normal map at half the size of the diffuse texture, as only a small area needed to be focused on.

Here was my method:

Remove everything but the 4 faces I wanted the normal map to apply to (because there are only 4 faces on my tracks that are UV'd, the rest are overlapping to mirror the result), so I deleted everything else as to stop it interfering with the normal map output, after saving of course, and then I built high poly treads to be placed on top, using my diffuse texture as a guide:

Above image shows the four faces I retained for the low-poly side of the normal transfer.

Above image shows the high poly treads I built.

Above image shows the transfer results as an applied texture, and the image below is the final output of the normal map at 512 x 512.

In hindsight i could have probably taken the resolution down to 256 x 256, however I wasn't too sure how this would effect the quality at the time and so played it safe with 512.
