I used a few techniques to arrive at this final outcome; I showed before how I used images to texture my model, and once all the base colours were down I used the same technique to apply dirt and rust. The majority of it however was done by using custom brushes that I've used for a while now, when it comes to flakey paint and rust they seem to do a really good job.
Here are the main custom brushes I used for applying dirt to my texture:
Throughout the texture creation I've used Photoshop's own tools for creating things like mimicking light and shadows. For example if you look at the chain links at the bottom of the first image, you can see that the rivets look as if light is reflecting on them and causing a shadow to be made behind them. I used 'bevel and emboss' for this as I've come to realise its a very quick and simple technique to use to add more detail into my textures without having to rely on normal or specular maps. Of course it does not react to light like normal and specular maps do, but so long as it is not overused it tends to add great detail to stationary meshes.
