Modelling Progress

So far I've managed to create my model, at almost a completed state (it's missing small things like mirrors and a few pipes here and there), with a total of 4500 triangles; just under half of the total polygon budget given by the brief.

I've been using image planes for the front and side orthographic views in order to create the model correct to the scale of the real life vehicle. The images I'm using are very detailed however once i had collected my reference images and started using them as image planes, I noticed that i had not quite removed the perspective view of the photograph when taking them. This meant that the side shot of the excavator wasn't quite a 'flat' image, and so I've had to improvise a little when building it in order for it to look accurate, as if i had followed the images exactly then I would have a slightly warped model. That being said, this type of error is something you can get around by just using common sense as well as looking at other perspective photographs I took to get the feel of the shape. No doubt this was caused by my amateur photography skills, but it was my first time taking reference photographs so I'm not too annoyed.

4500 Tri's. Rear and side image planes.
I still need to do a lot more optimisation to reduce the poly count, after that its onto UVing and texturing, and finally onto creating the diorama with the left over polys.

An example of optimisation. From 12 tris (left) to 10 (right)
